In-Stream Hydrokinetic, Tidal Energy
and Ocean Energy Environmental & Permitting Issues
Hydro Green Energy’s river (in-stream and Hydro+™), ocean and
tidal power projects are environmentally friendly, clean and renewable.
Below are some of the attributes of Hydro Green Energy’s many
hydrokinetic power projects:
• Zero carbon emissions
• Zero air pollution (NOx, SO2, mercury)
• Zero noise pollution
• Minimal visual impacts
• Minimal impact and interaction with seabed and riverbed
• Easily identifiable turbine arrays for boating, navigation and
fishing interests
• Low solidity ratio rotor
• Large diameter rotor
• Very slow turbine blade rotation – 21 RPM
• Low number of turbine blades – three
• Very small pressure gradients
• Modeling shows a fish survival rate of 99%
Permitting
Our patented technology at Hydro+™ projects today qualifies for
the Section 45 incremental hydropower production tax credit (1
cent per kWh) in the United States. These projects are brought
on-line via an amendment to the existing hydropower project license.
For in-stream, tidal and ocean projects, Hydro Green Energy will
obtain a preliminary permit, utilize the Federal Energy Regulatory
Commission’s (FERC) hydrokinetic pilot license process for a small-scale
demonstration, and then proceed to a traditional license for the
full-scale project.
The hydrokinetic pilot license process (United States) allows:
• Receive pilot license within 6 months of filing application;
• Pilot license good for up to 5 years;
• Pilot license allows generation up to 5 MW;
• Pilot license allows electricity to be sold on the electric
power grid (earn revenue while building out full-scale project);
• Pilot license can be converted into permanent 30 to 50 year
license; and
• Units must be removable if no permanent license application
will be filed or if unexpected issues arise during testing and
demonstration phase.
